ACE Award to Recognize Innovative Use of Technology to Promote Internationalization

Deadline for Submissions: October 15, 2009

The American Council on Education (ACE) is conducting a national call for award submissions, and will provide national recognition for innovative programs and approaches. The winning programs will be disseminated through a publication and a web site, and will provide ideas and examples that other institutions can adopt to infuse an international dimension into the curriculum and promote international learning. Although many technological resources provide instructional materials, these awards will be targeted to uses of technology that facilitate personal interaction between U.S. students and international students, scholars, and citizens.

Eligibility is limited to ACE member institutions, though ACE members may submit an application on behalf of a consortium. All ACE members or consortia of member institutions are invited to submit one or more proposals, as long as each describes a different initiative. Learning and the Social Web: A Call for Papers

A special issue of the Journal of Emerging Technologies in Web Intelligence (JETWI)

Presentation
While we have been successful at broadcasting learning material on the web, we are still falling short of capturing online the social interactions students experience. While online learning is effective, it is not as engaging as it could be. Indeed, we know that learning is facilitated by environmental factors such as socialization. Yet, during the last 6 or 7 years, several web applications and frameworks (e.g., Bebo, Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, Twitter) have proven that socialization on the web can go much beyond the early posting boards and online forums that are still in use within most learning management systems. Unfortunately, we still know little about what sustains social interaction on the Web. Moreover, online educators have to design more than course learning material. They have to enhance this material by scenarios which integrate online interactions.

Scope
We are inviting research articles concerning the theory, engineering and practice of learning and teaching on the Social Web. We are particularly inviting research contributions relative to:

• Methodologies to create and sustain online communities around learning objectives;
• Software to assist online educators and learners;
• Theoretical and empirical surveys of existing and emerging platforms.
• Surveys, tutorials, and case studies are also acceptable.

The Journal of Emerging Technologies in Web Intelligence (JETWI) is an international peer-reviewed and indexed journal published by Academy publisher (http://www.academypublisher.com/jetwi/). It aims at gathering the latest advances of various topics in web intelligence and reporting how organizations can gain competitive advantages by applying the different emergent techniques in the real-world scenarios.

MERLOT Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT)

The MERLOT Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT) is a peer-reviewed, online publication addressing the scholarly use of multimedia resources in education. The first issue of this new journal appeared online in July 2005 and included a number of invited papers from various disciplines. The Journal is now seeking manuscripts for its coming issues.
To be considered for the Spring 2010 issue, manuscripts must be submitted by November 15, 2009. The JOLT Editorial Board seeks to publish all works in a timely manner. While deadlines are set for each issue, space considerations and editorial decisions may delay the publication of a manuscript.

The objectives of MERLOT JOLT are to:

• Enable faculty to use technology effectively in teaching and learning by learning from a community of researchers and scholars;
• Enable academic programs to design and deploy academic technology to optimize teaching and learning;
• Build a community around the research and scholarly use of multimedia educational resources.

JOLT welcomes papers on all aspects of the use of online multimedia educational resources for learning and teaching. Topics may include, but are not limited to: learning theory and the use of multimedia to improve student learning; instructional design theory and application; online learning and teaching initiatives; use of technology in online education; innovative online learning and teaching practices.

Submissions Procedure Individuals interested in submitting chapters on the above-suggested topics or other related topics in their area of interest should submit via e-mail a 1-2 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter by August 30, 2009. Kindly include in your e-mail of interest your name, affiliation, and a list of topics (1 to 2) on which you are interested in writing a chapter. We strongly encourage other topics that have not been listed in our suggested list, particularly if the topic is related to the research area in which you have expertise. You will be notified about the status of your proposed topics by August 30, 2009. Upon acceptance of your proposal, you will have until October 30, 2009, to prepare your chapter. Guidelines for preparing your chapter and terms and definitions will be sent to you upon acceptance of your proposal.

The NMC Symposium for the Future is intended to be an ongoing conversation, focused the applications of new technologies to global concerns and issues, and how they will shape the future of education.An outgrowth of the NMC’s Emerging Technologies Initiative — the same initiative that drives the annual series of Horizon Reports — the Symposium will create an opportunity for exploration, a place to visit the future, and a forum for deep discussion of the range of possibilities that are open to educators, learners, and creatives in the digital age. It is designed as a forum for discussion of the real challenges that face our world and our society, and in particular, how emerging technologies might be applied to solve them.
